THE BUILDING
The belfry located in Kortrijk reigns over the Grote Markt and is a Unesco World Heritage Site.
This splendid 14th-century building dominates the Grand-Place. It was built in 1307, when the King of France allowed the city's burghers to have a belfry with bells as a watchtower, prison and carillon to keep the rhythm of their business. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a vestige of the medieval cloth market. The carillon features no fewer than 48 bells. A statue of Mercury, the god of commerce, dominates the whole. The clock was made by the famous clockmakers Manten and Kalle.
