THE BROEL TOWERS
The Broel Towers have a marshy terrain, with the last intact remains of the old city fortifications.
Broel comes from the word "bruul", which refers to marshy or wasteland that is hard to imagine but which existed here in the Middle Ages. Opened on the occasion of certain events, these two towers are the last intact remains of the city's ancient fortifications. The south tower, known as the Speye Tower, was built in 1385 to control the bridge over the Leie and was part of the castle of the Counts of Flanders. The north tower, known as the Ingelborch tower, was erected around 1413 to defend the artillery pieces of the time.
