ST. VAST'S CHURCH
Church located in Menin, with a painting representing Saint Vaast, and a neoclassical facade evoking a Greek temple.
Dedicated to Saint Vaast, bishop of Arras who chased away a bear, the church dates from 1821. It was built on the site of an old fortified chapel dating from 1087, at the time of the lords of Menin. The base of the limestone bell tower dates from 1454. Its neoclassical façade evokes a Greek temple. The painting representing Saint Vaast is by Adriaan Wulffaert; it is an eye-catcher, as are the two magnificently sculpted prie-dieu, one of which represents the Last Supper. The originality of the place is that the nave is entirely covered by a one-piece roof.
