THE REMARKS
The ramparts are Dutch fortifications, with a pedestrian passage, a former course of the stream of Geluwebeek.
Vauban turned this border town into a model fortified city, built between 1679 and 1689, with 3 km, 11 bastions and 4 gates. The current Dutch fortifications (1817-1830) that were added are unique in the country. A pedestrian walkway - the former course of the Geluwebeek stream - leads to the Brouwerspark and the Academy of Fine Arts. Another attraction is the casemates at Oude Leielaan: eleven underground casemates are open to the public, from May to September, on the first Sunday of the month from 2pm to 6pm.
