THE LIGHT
The Nieuwpoort lighthouse, the first on the European continent, with a few meters above sea level and a luminous halo
Originally built in 1881, the lighthouse was destroyed in World War I and World War II. The present lighthouse was first used in 1949. This time it is a concrete construction with red and white stripes. It rises 27 m above sea level and the light halo reaches 29 m. The red flashing light emits a flash every 14 seconds. The last lighthouse keeper served until his retirement in 1963. Since then, operation has been regulated by means of an electronic remote control.
