SAINT-LAWRENCE TOWER
The ruins of the old Saint-Laurent church, with a tower that served as an observation post, witness to the history of Nieuport.
Here are the ruins of the former Saint-Laurent church. A fortified castle in the Middle Ages, its tower served as an observation post and gunpowder storehouse around 1820, and was destroyed in 1917. Today, only a third of its original height remains, but it remains an interesting testimony to Nieuport's early history. Known in the vernacular as "Duvetorre", its name refers not to pigeons(duiven) but to the devil(duivel). It is said that in the shadow of this tower, Jeanne Panne held her sabbaths and rendezvoused with the devil.
