Founded in 1829, it was originally a hospital belonging to the Black Nuns and was called Sint-Janshospitaal. It became a civil hospital in 1829 and was renamed in honor of the liberal mayor Henri Serruys. It recently merged with the AZ Sint-Jan in Bruges to form the "AZ Sint-Jan Brugge-Oostende AV", but the Henri Serruys hospital campus has been retained.
