THE DIGUE
Ostend seawall with cafes and merchants as well as a 1950's design casino and royal galleries
You can't leave Ostend without having strolled along the dike, lined with café terraces, waffle and ice-cream vendors, paced by families. Here you will find the 1950 design casino, whose sleek curve follows the curve of the dike. A little further on, the Royal Galleries, completed in 1905, whose arcades were used during the Belle Epoque to shelter the bourgeoisie from the sun and bad weather. Leopold II had commissioned it in 1906 to Girault, architect of the Grand Palais in Paris. The Palais des thermes was added around 1930.
