HEAVY NAPOLEON
Fort Napoleon, the most important monument in Flanders, has an exhibition on the history of the siege of Ostend, with a brewery.
It was on Napoleon's orders that the construction of a fort on the coast was started in anticipation of an English attack. It was then in 1810. It was completed in 1814, shortly before the fall of the Empire. This impressive building is the main monument in Flanders dating from the Napoleonic period. It was later used by the Germans during the war, but never played a very important role. It can now be visited with an audio guide. Also an exhibition about the history of the siege of Ostend. A must-see. Brewery on the spot.
