RAVERSIJDE DOMAIN - ATLANTIC WALL
The Ravrsijde domain in Ostend, situated in the middle of the dunes and a few steps from the sea, offers a pleasant environment.
The domain of Raversijde, in a beautiful natural setting in the middle of the dunes and close to the sea, offers a pleasant environment. It attracts families and visitors to three sites of interest. The first is a memorial dedicated to Prince Charles, regent of Belgium for six years after the Second World War. A museum about his life is housed in the modest fisherman's cottage that was his home until he sold it to the Belgian state in 1981. The second attraction is the archaeological site Walraversijde. It includes a reconstruction of an authentic fishing village based on local excavations, as the four fishermen's houses were built with bricks of medieval origin. Last but not least, the remains of the Atlantic Wall, the last great line of defense in Europe during the Second World War. At the time, it linked Norway to the French and Spanish coasts over 5,300 km! This open-air museum is an exceptional historical site, as it is one of the rare remains of this wall still standing. TheAtlantikwall presents about sixty German constructions of the two world wars, trenches, underground tunnels, bunkers, coastal batteries... as many vestiges of architecture and arsenal of war. Some of them have been rebuilt identically and refurbished with period objects to immerse the visitor. You can feel the heavy atmosphere of the "longest day" by visiting the underground.
