THE STATUE OF TANNEKEN
The end of the Middle Ages is marked by a veritable witch-hunt throughout Europe. Tanneken Sconyncx, born around 1560 in Gottem, married and mother of four children, was victims and unjustly accused of witchcraft. After a two-month stay in a cell under the belfry, she himself relations with the Devil before succumbing to torture. It will thus spread the fate of thousands of women in the region, who at the end of the th and early th centuries were cruelly persecuted. The bronze statue of artist Jef Claerhout represents her as an angel amount in heaven. On the Grand-Place of Tielt, in front of the Hooghuys, this monument embodies the posthumous rehabilitation of all innocent victims of this witch hunt.
