STATUE OF ALEXANDER SPIERINCK
Alexander Spierinck (Tielt, c. 1360 - March 29, 1403) is perhaps the most influential character of Tielt. Faced with the assassination of the priest of Kanegem, this high official and sheriff of the County of Flanders had, at the beginning of the th century, ruled on the fate of the alleged guilty Jan Vleminck. He rushed to condemn him to death despite the proclamation of innocence of the convicted person. " I come from Kanegem and I don't know anything. " He was hanged without further consideration. The wife of the convict came too late to prove the innocence of his late husband. Alexander Spierinck, as to pay for this unjust hanging, died one week later.
