The Bekaert House was part of an old brewery. The first brewery was founded in 1858 and was taken over five years later by the Bekaert family. They produced, in particular, dark beer and brewed until 1927. The brewery was moved to Courtaix and the role of Torhout was limited to the distribution of the beer. The mansion became the property of the city in 1979. The company buildings were also purchased by the city. And in the backyard of the building there is still a malt tower!
