TOWN HALL - STADHUIS
Veurne's town hall with an amazing and unique center with interactive materials and period objects
The town hall, built between 1596 and 1612, century is a pure example of Flemish Renaissance architecture. Its halls and salons, richly decorated with Mechelen leather, paintings by local artists and beautiful fireplaces, are a testament to the talent and skill of the craftsmen of the time. The town hall is also called the Spanish Officers' Pavilion in memory of its occupation as military headquarters in the 17th century. It was also the headquarters of the Belgian army during the First World War. The town hall also offers an amazing centre: the Free Fatherland Experience Centre which focuses not on the front lines and battles but on life in the rear, in the only part of the country that remained free, the famous Belgian sector that resisted enemy assaults for 4 years. Mixing interactive media and period objects, this new centre allows visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the period. A building between history, tradition and modernity not to be missed.
