BALUARTE DE SAN ANTONIO
Small fortification dating from the 17th century to defend the city against pirate attacks in Champoton
This small fortification dates back to the 17th century, although it is difficult to see it due to the modernity of its renovation which hides the old stones. Built by Antonio Llovet to defend the city against pirate attacks, it is today the only trace of this past. The bastion is also known as the Castillo de Moch Couoh, the illustrious Mayan warrior who put up resistance in 1517. A sculpture representing him, a replica of a monolith from the X'Culoc archaeological zone of Hopelchen, sits in the adjoining square.
