This is the only river on the Yucatán Peninsula that flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Over 45 kilometers long, nearly 35 of which are navigable. Its waters were already a vital resource for the region in Mayan times, and it was here that the Spanish landed on the coast. At Highway 180, under the bridge, roofed boats offer rides on the river. An authentic and peaceful excursion, far from the main tourist routes of the peninsula. You're likely to come across a few caimans...
