AH MUCEN KAB
This is an excellent project, led by a small group of women from the community who are determined to take action to prevent the extinction of the local species of bees, the famous Xuna'an kab (honey ladies), brought to earth directly by the Mayan god Ah Mucen Kab. These bees naturally make their nests in tree trunks where they produce this dripping honey, a true nectar of sylvan flowers that strengthens and rejuvenates the body. These small bees are part of the meliponios family, typical of South America and known for not having a stinger. In Mexico, they are found mainly in the south (Campeche, Quintana Roo, Chiapas) but they are still threatened by the intensive clearing of the forest and the use of chemicals in agriculture. The honey produced, of great purity (liquid and without tendency to crystallize), is closely associated with traditional Mayan medicine rather than food consumption: throat infections, allergies and respiratory problems, skin rejuvenation and drops to relieve the eyes and eyeballs. The wax is used to remove skin blemishes, heal sunburns and relieve baby irritations. Melipona honey is also an essential ingredient in the fermentation of the sacred drink of Mayan priests, balché.
This group of women received the Ecuator Prize in 2014 for all the work they continue to do and spread to neighboring communities.
