An area that stands out for its cultural and natural heritage in Calakmul.
The Calakmul area is distinguished by its cultural heritage and natural heritage and it would be a pity to neglect the second. After the entrance to the reserve itself, on the 40 km of winding road leading to the ruins, various trails have indeed been arranged to go around. It is best to arrive at dawn to increase your chances of watching birds and mammals (cervids, boars, spiders and Cree monkeys, etc.) gathering around water points; Several trails are indicated along the road but it is much better to have the services of a certified guide to make the visit more interesting (both forest and ruins). They are found just at the toll on the main road (we arrange the price and take them by car - from $ 600, the price varies according to the experience of the guide). You can also contact directly the Campamento Yaxche or Ezequiel Cauich, a very famous guide locally for animal observation ([email protected]/+52 1 983 836 6467). Any hotel in which you reside in the region will also propose guided tours of the site. The Centro de Información Turistica (www.visitcalakmul.com) site of Xpujil also provides a list of specialized guides and can contact you.
Monkeys and birds can be seen by visiting the archeological zone. But for those who really want to listen to the sounds of the forest and approach its inhabitants, ecotourism trails have been set up around the steep road leading to the ruins of Calakmul. They go directly from the road: It is possible to park on the path and then walk on the forest for a few kilometers.
Of course, those who wish to immerse themselves in the forest and move away from the trails must be accompanied by a local guide. For bird watching, you are advised to contact Ezequiel Cavich who works with Operation Wallacea, and who is a person with full confidence: [email protected] or +52 983 836 6467. Easier to reach by e-mail than by phone.
The Yaax 'ché community also offers this type of excursion, and organizes camps in the forest. Information and Reservations: ++52 983 871 6064 or ++52 1 983 101 1921; and www.ecoturismocalakmul.com
