ZONA ARQUEOLÓGICA DE BECÁN
Site that includes the Plaza Este with many small rooms and decorated with valuable details in Becan
The site includes about twenty monumental structures: plazas and palaces with covered passages and labyrinthine stairways. Entering the site through the main entrance, one comes upon the Plaza Este, delimited by structures that are easy and pleasant to explore; Structure IV, with four levels, has many small rooms and is decorated with appreciable details, while Structure I still preserves its two towers of about fifteen meters. Other smaller structures close the square, while a circular altar marks the center. Continuing along the path we come to the large Central Plaza and Structure X, a large palace with an interior patio that houses chicozapote trees providing the necessary shade for the sunny traveler. Its south face has a large stucco mask representing an anthropomorphic figure, and its interior a network of covered passages and stairways that appear and disappear here and there. Structure IX is the only pyramidal structure, but it is 32 meters high: you can reach the top by climbing a steep staircase with a rope to avoid falling. From there, the view on the jungle impresses, as well as the panorama on the Structure VIII, endowed with two side towers and columns which supported a system of rooms in its top. The three towers of the archaeological zone of Xpujil are also visible on the horizon.
