ZONA ARQUEOLÓGICA CHICANNÁ
Site with buildings that have architectural characteristics associated with the Rio Bec style in Chicanna
Occupied from the 4th century B.C. until the 13th century, this site will immerse you in the decorative meanderings of Mayan architecture. Its buildings present architectural characteristics that are associated with the Rio Bec style, as well as decorative elements typical of the Chenes, namely the large zoomorphic masks made of assembled stones that cover the facade of the temples. This is the case of the facade of the XX structure, which we discover first. It is the highest building of the site; composed of two floors, its interior contains no less than fourteen small rooms, some of which present some decorations that are also worth a look. The remains of what must have been an imposing ridge are visible at the top. Further on, the access to the central plaza is through the oldest building of the site (structure XI), also perhaps even of the region, now in ruins: it shows indications of a Petén style, previous to that of Río Bec. In the central plaza, structure I represents the best example of Río Bec architecture at this site: the platform flanked by two rows of three chambers is surrounded by two imposing towers whose sides are decorated with stone mosaics that form intertwined patterns. The structure II is finally the most impressive of all, the one that makes the visit of this site indispensable: the zoomorphic mask of the very long building is in a remarkable state of conservation
