TEMPLE DE JANUS
The remains of a typical Gallo-Roman sanctuary, a fanum dedicated to a deity unknown in Autun.
Situated 400 m from the ramparts, on the other side of the Arroux river, this monument dates from the 3rd century B.C. and is the remains of a Gallic sanctuary, a fanum dedicated to an unknown divinity, the attribution to Janus referring to the Jenetoy district. It comprises a cella (worship hall), a kind of square tower, approximately 24 m high and 16 m on each side, once covered, of which only two sections remain today. The surviving niche housed a statue of the deity. An aerial view reveals that the temple once belonged to a religious complex.
