The ancient wall of Autun remains at least two thirds, one of the best preserved of Roman Gaul. Designed under the Emperor Augustus, she described a course of 6 km and covered an area of nearly 200 ha. Defended by fifty-three circular towers (twenty-three are still visible today), it was the breakthrough of four monumental doors. His role was honorary, the importance of the rampart underlining the power of the city. The walls were re-used in the Middle Ages. The best preserved portion of the hotel is the Résistants-Shot and the Ursulines tower.
