THE BALTHUS PASSAGE
Visit Passage Balthus, the neo-Renaissance building that was destined to become Autun's halles.
Passage Balthus is a former open-air market hall, built in 1737. In 1848, it was transformed into a covered passage designed by architect Palluet. Its neo-Renaissance decor, blue-and-white paving and original glass roof give it an unexpected elegance in a city where the remains are more likely to be antique. Small boutiques on either side enliven the space. Reminiscent of many similarly structured Parisian passages, the Passage Balthus is officially "twinned" with the Passage du Nord in Brussels.
