LE VIEUX TILLEUL
The Vieux Tilleul, one of the few surviving trees in Auxy's remarkable history.
The large plant is almost 15 metres high and its circumference exceeds six metres. According to experts, its branches cover an area of almost 250 square metres. The lime tree used to welcome landlords and their farmers who came to settle their accounts at certain times of the year. The tree dates back to the time of Henri IV. In 1597, his minister Sully ordered that an elm or lime tree be planted in public squares or in front of church doors in every village in France, so that parishioners could meet before and after church services under the shade of the tree and discuss parish affairs, symbolising the peace that had been restored to the kingdom after 30 years of religious war. At more than 400 years old, it remains one of the rare survivors of these remarkable trees by their history, their age and their dimensions. This remarkable tree was classified as a natural site and monument of "artistic, historical, scientific, legendary or picturesque character" in 1932. The tree lends itself wonderfully to sylvotherapy, a fashionable trend consisting of hugging the tree.
