ERMITAGE OF THE WHITE DESERT
Monastery, printing house, library and museum with a rich astronomical collection maintained by the monks.
The monastery was built in the 16th century by Benedictine monks fleeing from the Ottoman advance with the beautiful white Brač stone. Along the steep wall, the original cave was extended with a church, residential and commercial buildings. On a soil of little fertility, the monks managed to cultivate the land for four centuries, for wine and olive growing. They also maintained a printing house and a library. The current museum includes a rich astronomical collection. From Bol, another footpath leads to the monastery.
