GROTTES DE BLANOT
Caves of Blanot with galleries rich in stalactites and stalagmites, representing the successive phases of the digging.
At the foot of Mont Saint-Romain, with its panoramic view of the Mâconnais and the Bresse, 11 km from Cluny, the cave of Blanot sinks to a depth of more than 80 meters. Discovered in 1739 by Dr. Dumolin, the cave develops in the Bajocian limestone, in a tormented zone made of limestone panels intersected by important faults. The visit begins in a huge room of 50 meters length, to sink in a strong slope of 80 meters of depth. Remember to put on a sweater because, under the cave, the constant temperature is 13 °C! The descent is a bit sportive (and especially the ascent!) with its 650 stairs. Open your eyes and admire these incredible galleries and rooms where the stalagmites and stalactites testify to the successive diggings and offer a surprising picture. About sixty bats have also taken up residence in the caves but they are shy, so if you want to see them, keep your eyes open! A showcase within the cave presents discoveries from archaeological digs including bones of prehistoric animals as well as an exhibition of flints. In summer, the association la Cailleverdière organizes guided tours of the caves in a caving atmosphere. The visit lasts between 1h30 and 2h, in the evening. A real original discovery in the heart of the Mâconnais. A nature day to do with the family (be careful with young children) with the possibility to picnic on the spot to make the most of it.
