SANCTUARY OF NUESTRA SEÑORA DE CONSOLACIÓN
Sanctuary of great size that houses the miraculous image of the Virgin Nuestra Señora de Consolación
Situated around 3 km from the center of Utrera, this very large sanctuary welcomes many pilgrims, as it houses the miraculous image of the Virgin Nuestra Señora de Consolación, a 15th-century work representing Utrera's patron saint. It can be reached by car via the paseo de la Consolación, a pleasant promenade with trees and gardens, or by taking the pilgrims' path that runs alongside it. You can also stop off at one of the many terraces along the way. Although attached to a convent of Minimes founded in the 16th century, the sanctuary was essentially built in the 17th century and completed in 1714. The recently restored facade features a pyramidal structure in 17th-century azulejos above the entrance door, depicting the Virgin Mary, San Francisco de Paula and San Fernando. Shaped like a Latin cross with a single nave, the church is built around its main treasure, the image of the Virgin of Consolation, located in the main altarpiece. Other particularly noteworthy features include the church's magnificent coffered ceiling; the azulejos all along the nave, with a geometrically patterned decoration above, combining the red, blue and white tones typical of Muslim art. There are also several late 17th-century paintings depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. Housed within the main altarpiece, which dates from the early 17thcentury and is attributed to Jean de Brunenque, the Vierge de la Consolation could be from the 14th or 15thcentury , although the date and author are unknown. A wooden staircase leads from the sacristy to the camarín, the chapel behind the apse.
