CASTLE OF UTRERA
Castle-fortress with a long history, built by the Council of Seville on the remains of an old Arab tower
This is the only climb you will have to make by visiting Utrera since the city is almost flat but to access this castle, located on natural hill, northwest of the city, you will need to climb some stairs. Once you arrive at the first hotel and even more from the dungeon, you will enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city, with the foreground, the Santiago el Mayor Church and a little further in the distance, Santa María de la Mesa. This fortress castle has a long history for a city that has played a border role. Built by the Seville Council on the remnants of an ancient Arab tower, it is mentioned in the writings of Alphonse X, the wise, in 1264, then destroyed in 1368 by Mohammed V of Granada to be rebuilt at the end of the xivth century. It will be abandoned at the end of the fifteenth century until 1915. Since then, restoration work has been regularly undertaken to make it a place open to all audiences. The access is made by the north-east facade, formed by a bow in full hangers, defended by a dungeon. An imposing construction that is best preserved from all towers, including its internal structure: two levels of vaulted vaults at eight-fold. The climb of this dungeon will give you access to two miradors, at different heights. It should be noted that if the general shape of this fortress is rectangular, it nevertheless adapts to the northeast/southwest direction of the hill: smaller square towers when angles are oriented towards the interior of the fortress and wider on the sides oriented towards the slope of the hill. On the ground floor you will find an interpretation center and on the first floor an exhibition showing the process of restoring the castle.
