LAGUNA DE TÉRMINOS
Precious lake system fed by fresh water from rivers as well as by salt water from the ocean in Isla Aguada
With its 70 kilometers of length, it almost looks like a small sea, even more so when ripples form as the breeze rises. This precious lake system is fed by fresh water from rivers (underground or not) as well as by salt water from the ocean; the silt and clay-rich mud constitutes an ultra-fertile ground for the algae and plants that thrive at the bottom of the lagoon, but also for the approximately 1,500 animal species that have been counted and that find their happiness there in terms of food and nesting areas in particular. Because of its biodiversity, the lagoon is part of the protected areas of Mexico, and this since 1994. Its well-oxygenated waters are known to be a sanctuary of the first rank for dolphins, which are born and spend their lives there; they can be seen at any time of the day and year. And with a little luck, you may even cross paths with a school of up to a hundred individuals! This preserved ecosystem is also an ideal refuge for shrimp, crab, lisa (mullet), cazón (shark-hâ or milandre) and even turtles(Carey and Blanca) and finally the manati (manatee). The shores of the lagoon, between high grass savannah and low forest, welcome frigate birds, cormorants, pelicans, storks, peregrine falcons and other American jabirua; the Pájaros island, covered with mangrove, is not to be outdone. It is a unique meeting point for migratory birds from the north and south of the American continent.
