SALINAS DA FONTE DA BICA
Salt flats in Rio Major inviting to a walk to admire the complex on a rock salt mine crossed by a fresh water stream.
To the west of Santarém, at the foot of the Serra dos Candeeiros, a visit to the Salinas da Fonte da Bica, or Marinhas de Sal, makes for a pleasant stroll. The surface installations date back to 1177, but salt mining on the site is thought to date back to prehistoric times. The complex extends over 21,865m2, on a rock salt mine crossed by a current of fresh water that turns into... salt water. It is this water that is exploited: its salt content is seven times higher than that of seawater! These are the only saltworks of their kind still in operation in Portugal.
