PUITS HOTTINGER
The Hottinger well at Epinac, one of the deepest in France, is also a remarkable work of industrial archaeology.
Also known as the Tour Malakoff, the Puits Hottinger is a remarkable piece of industrial archaeology. It was one of the main collieries of the Épinac coal mine, whose industrial past is steeped in history. The square-shaped extraction tower houses a 618-meter-deep shaft, one of the deepest in France. Featuring a highly modern extraction system for its time, it enabled 4.5 tons of coal to be hauled up in 7 minutes, and the galleries to be ventilated. Mining was abandoned around 1884 and the shaft closed in 1936.
