MARITIME MUSEUM AND BOAT MUSEUM SANTO ANDRE
Museum retracing the epic of the , fish caught at sea by Portuguese trawlers. You can also visit the museum boat.
An architectural marvel, the Ilhavo Maritime Museum recounts the fascinating story of bacalhau, the fish caught in the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic (Norway and Canada) by Portuguese trawlers that stayed offshore for several months, most of them leaving from Aveiro. Thanks to the archives, you will understand that the fishermen came from all over the country and not only from the coasts because it was a lucrative but dangerous job.
An authentic wooden fisherman's boat, the "Faina Maior", has been restored and you can climb on it and visit it. This type of wooden boat was used until the 1940s-1950s, but was abandoned due to the fires that occurred in them (often due to the ovens in the kitchens) and caused them to sink. Another room explains the fishing of seaweed in the lagoon of Aveiro, with an exhibition of old boats and fishing instruments of the time.
The cod aquarium. We all know this fish that is very popular in the Portuguese cuisine, but you will see that the live cod are very impressive!
Don'tmiss the Santo Andre museum boat, a trawler located on the docks of Forte da Barra, a 5 minute drive from the maritime museum. It is quite different from the wooden boats of the past!
On the cais dos Bacalhoeiros, in the port of Aveiro, you will see trawlers in activity (not allowed to visit) in front of which are lined up the most famous cod factories in Portugal.
