LE MARTEAU PILON
With its 21-meter height, 1,300 tons and Eiffel Tower shape, the power hammer is the emblem and pride of Le Creusot.
Displayed on an esplanade at the southern entrance to Le Creusot, the hammer is its emblem, a symbol of its glorious industrial past, when the Schneider factories ruled the metal industry. Commissioned in 1877, this 21-meter-high, 1,300-ton steam-powered tool was just as capable of exerting 100 tons of pressure as it was of hammering nails into wood. It was the most powerful press in the world until 1891, and remained in service until 1930 and the advent of hydraulic presses. It is the largest visible specimen of its kind in the world.
