OLD PERITHIA
Village with houses of authentic style, the oldest example of the traditional villages of the Corfu mountains.
The Unesco World Heritage village has risen from the ashes. It was once one of the best hiding places from pirate attacks, and one of the richest villages on the island. It had a population of more than 1,200 people before it was emptied. One hundred and thirty houses make up the village, all built by hand, in an architecture largely influenced by the Venetian era. Falling into disrepair, they are being renovated in their authentic style, so that the village will be rebuilt exactly as it was founded in the 14th century. This makes it the "oldest" example of the traditional villages of the Corfu mountains. The atmosphere in its streets retains the special flavour of the past, despite the fact that a few taverns and shops have been reopened to bring the village back to life - in winter they are only open at weekends. Today, it has a population of six. Of the town's eight churches, each of which belongs to an old village family, only the pretty Aghios Iakovos Persis, at the entrance to the village, is being restored. Take a walk in the area, the nature is beautiful. Enjoy also the amazing view of the surrounding mountains and the sea! To reach Old Perithia (also called High Perithia), you can follow the mountain road to Mount Pantokrator (from Kassiopi to Acharavi) by car - but parking spaces are limited - or take an incredible walk through the lush nature of the surroundings.
