House whose facade is entirely built in wood and decorated with a multitude of statuettes
Built between 1490 and 1510, the Maison de Bois is probably the oldest house in Mâcon and also the most famous. Its facade, entirely built in wood, is decorated with a multitude of grotesque looking statuettes composed of fantastical characters with masks of men and monkeys, grimacing, wriggling, sitting, winged and sometimes naked. Moreover, in the 16th century, the Maison de Bois would have been the seat of the Balchic brotherhood of Malgouverne, an assembly of young people judged licentious and dissolved in 1625.
La Maison de Bois is a true institution in Mâcon, a place to visit because of its construction material. It is also a bar and a familiar place to enjoy meal for the Mâconnais who like to meet there until late in the evening. A historical monument since 1920, the Maison de Bois has been owned by the municipality since 1992. In 2011, the address has been completely renewed and given a facelift with a new, modern terrace that further enhances the historical heritage. Drinking a drink at the Maison de Bois is an essential stop!
