COMMUNAUTE ŒCUMENIQUE INTERNATIONALE DE TAIZE
Taizé has been a welcoming, international ecumenical community since 1940.
An ecumenical community founded by Brother Roger, who came from Switzerland at the age of 25 in 1940. Having acquired an abandoned house where he took in fugitives (Jews in particular) during the war, he was denounced in 1942 and had to flee until his return in 1944, accompanied by some Brothers. Today there are more than 100 of them, Catholics or of other evangelical origins, from more than 20 nations. They live solely from their work. In small fraternities, some are established in various disadvantaged places around the world. Taizé has received and continues to receive visits from many prominent members of various churches, such as the Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew in April 2017. In 1966, the Sisters of St Andrew came to live in the nearby village to help welcome the growing number of young people coming from all continents for a few weeks of meetings. They were later joined by some Polish Ursulines. Taizé gives priority to hosting international meetings of young people aged 17 to 30. But, from time to time, meetings of adults or families for a weekend or a few days are also organised. The contribution to the costs proposed for young people includes accommodation and meals. The amount varies a little according to their country of origin and their possibilities. But Taizé also welcomes adults for individual retreats in communion with the community, and also families with children.
