SAINTE-MADELEINE CHURCH
A Romanesque church with remarkable features, including a carved wooden portal and square bell tower.
Dating from the 12th century, the church of Sainte-Madeleine was located in the heart of Tournus. Romanesque in style, it was consecrated in 1148 by the Bishop of Chalon. The church's architecture is simple, but features some remarkable elements, including the famous Louis XV-style carved wooden portal, one of the richest and most picturesque Romanesque portals in 12th-century Burgundy. The chevet and its typically Romanesque square bell tower can be admired from the quays of the Saône. The interior is striking for its sobriety, the whiteness of its nave and its simplicity.
