LIME KILNS
Visit the lime kilns in the heart of the Charolais region, a rare example of industrial heritage from the and centuries.
In the heart of the Charolais region, the Fours à Chaux (lime kilns) are a real surprise. Located at the bottom of the Semence valley, in an environment strongly marked by hedged farmland, three 24 m-high brick chimneys stand tall. They are the last remaining examples in France of this industrial heritage from the 19th and 20th centuries. The furnaces were built between 1879 and 1881 and operated until the 1960s. Limestone was fired to produce lime, mainly used by farmers. Panels explain how the kilns worked.
