Louis-Nicolas Davout's house still bears a commemorative plaque.
Napoleonic history buffs probably know Louis-Nicolas Davout, Marshal of the Empire who participated in the battle of Waterloo. He was born on May 10, 1770 in Annoux, to a father who was a lieutenant in the Royal-Champagne-Cavalry Regiment and Lord of Annoux. His birth house still has a commemorative plaque. In 1770, he moved with his parents to Étivey, 10 kilometers away, before entering the Military School of Auxerre and then the Royal Military School of Paris following the young Napoleon. He followed Bonaparte to Egypt, took part in several battles and obtained the rank of major general. He played a decisive role at Austerlitz and in the Prussian campaign of 1806. He was again decisive in the victory at Wagram. Napoleon named Davout Prince of Wagram. Later, the warlord bought and lived in a house at the entrance of Annoux. The man closed his eyes at the age of 53, in June 1823. His body is buried in the Parisian cemetery of Père-Lachaise.
