LA PORTE NOEL
Enclosure which counted twenty-nine towers and three main doors in Chablis.
The lower town of Chablis was fortified in the 10th century. The ramparts of the upper town date from the 12th century. Alas, at the beginning of the 15th century, the ramparts only protected one fifth of the population. A new wall was then built and completed in 1421; it had twenty-nine towers and three main gates. Jehan Noël, who worked on its construction, left his name to the south gate, also called St Peter's Gate, because it overlooks the suburb of the same name. The present round towers date from 1775.
