The upper and lower town of Châtel-Censoir with its beautiful residences, a promontory with a view of the Nivernais canal
Until the French Revolution, the upper town was the seat of political and military power, as evidenced by the presence of the castle dating from the 11th century. The Saint-Potentien collegiate church proves that the religious and intellectual power had also chosen this side of the city. Around, take advantage of the beautiful houses built between the 16th and 18th centuries and of a promontory with a nice view on the Nivernais canal and the Yonne valley.
The lower town, initially a town of the people, gradually expanded with the cultivation of the vine, but other activities developed there such as crafts and farming. In the middle of the 16th century, the floats arrived on the river to transport the first wood trains from the Morvan to Paris. The lower town became more and more important by welcoming the political power from the 19th century.
