Just outside Auxerre, the Gallo-Roman site of Escolives is an archaeological nugget in the heart of the vineyards. Situated on the ancient Roman road of Agrippa, its origins lie near the Creusot spring, which has attracted mankind since Neolithic times. Period after period has followed, as evidenced by the ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa and thermal baths, and a Merovingian cemetery. A fascinating visit for the whole family, in an absolutely magnificent setting.

Een archeologische site waar men per toeval de resten van een Romeinse villa heeft ontdekt. De bewoners behoorden tot de rijke garde aangezien het huis beschikte over uitgebreide thermen en er tevens een boerderij aanwezig was.

Visite passionnante et instructive, en compagnie d'un guide qui connaît bien son sujet. Fouilles ayant débutées dans les années 50 suite à un heureux hasard, on imagine sans peine la vie de ces riches romains qui avaient choisi la Gaule comme lieu de villégiature. Ruines imposantes de thermes et d'une partie de la villa, et un musée avec les objets trouvés lors des campagnes de fouilles. On serait bien resté pour contempler les témoins de ce lointain passé !
