A sanctuary dedicated to Mercury, god of commerce, with a sign announcing the road between Fontenay-près-Vézelay and Chamoux.
900 years before our time, the forest plateau west of Vézelay was already active. The soil, rich in salt and iron, attracted the Gallo-Roman populations who set up a steel industry there. In the forest of Fontenay-près-Vézelay, at a place called Crot-au-Port, installations from this ancient period have been discovered, including numerous ceramics from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. A sanctuary dedicated to Mercury, god of trade, seems to have been installed. Today, a single sign warns of the presence of the site on the road between Fontenay-près-Vézelay and Chamoux, on the road to Saint-Jacques which enters the forest.
