PORTE DU BOIS
A door built with flint from the Forêt d'Othe, which served as a fodder store for the army's horses.
Of the 4 gates forming the Joigny enclosure in the 13th century, the Porte du Bois is the only "surviving" one. The other still visible (the Porte Saint-Jean) was indeed part of a different enclosure. Built with flint from the Forest of Othe (on which it opens), it keeps the traces of its defensive character, in particular the round towers which sheltered the watchmen. From the 17th century onwards, Joigny became a garrison town. The army then used it as a fodder granary for its horses, hence the small gate with pulley that still exists.
