MUSÉE D’ART ET D’HISTOIRE DE PUISAYE
Museum in the heart of the village of Villiers Saint-Benoît, housing statues from Burgundian religious buildings
A few kilometers from Toucy, in the heart of the village of Villiers Saint-Benoît, this small (and superb) museum has everything to seduce you. Located in a beautiful 18th century bourgeois house typical of the Poyaudine region, the premises once belonged to the interior designer Paul Huillard (1875-1966) whose name the street where the museum is located bears today. Huillard donated not only his house, but also his impressive and sumptuous collection of stoneware to the commune. So, as its name indicates, this museum will plunge you into the soul of Puisaye. In addition to the famous blue sandstones of Paul Hulliard (les Bleus de Saint-Vérain), you will discover the traditional regional rural habitat thanks to the reconstitution of a typical bourgeois kitchen as well as a dining room and a library presented here as "the cabinet of a scholar". Also worth seeing is the Statuary: a room that brings together statues from Burgundian religious buildings. Not forgetting the magnificent pieces of Art Nouveau furniture, including a sideboard signed by the former master of the house. In 2022, the museum should be further enriched by a loan from the Mobilier National. Finally, temporary exhibitions and art workshops are regularly offered. In short, run to Villiers Saint-Benoît where much more than a museum awaits you: a real little jewel! And a must for those who want to know better the country of Colette and its old traditions.
