THE BUILDING
The belfry in Fougères, the oldest preserved belfry in Brittany, is worth a visit.
Built in the 14th century, this belfry was inspired by Flemish models observed by the drapers of Fougères during their travels. It was the building that underlined the growing power of the bourgeoisie within the town, as opposed to that of the lords and the Church. It also served as a watchtower. The monument features a bell tower and bells that are still ringing. If you look carefully, you'll notice details such as gargoyles, carved coats of arms and a weather vane. This is the oldest preserved belfry in Brittany, dating back to 1397.
