LE VILLAGE D'APREMONT-SUR-ALLIER
At the end of the 19th century, Eugène Schneider came to Apremont-sur-Allier through his marriage to Antoinette de Saint-Sauveur, then owner of the château by inheritance. In love with the area, Eugène decided to give the village the medieval Berrichon style he loved so much, to create a unity with the château. To achieve this, he spent more than 10 years buying up every house in the village, one by one, as opportunities arose. All but one: the village's small café-grocery-tobacco store. Restoration work was carried out on a long-term basis, using ashlar from nearby quarries, and creating hedges of hornbeam cut into molehills. The color, "Van Dyck Brown", was specially created. It is still used today to paint windows, doors and shutters on village houses. These houses are maintained by the family, but most are rented out year-round to local residents.
