HÔTEL-DIEU
The Hôtel-Dieu, part Gothic, part classical, tells the story of the town and its medical role over four centuries.
Begun in the early 16th century, the Hôtel-Dieu de Bourges combines Gothic and classical architecture. Built in the area ravaged by the great fire of 1487, it was constructed at a time when Bourges had a population of 15,000. In the 17th century, architect Jean Lejuge added two more modern-style buildings. Classified as a historic monument in 1946, the Hôtel-Dieu ceased its medical activities after four centuries, in 1994, and today houses the Maison des Associations, a university residence and housing.
