JACQUES-CŒUR PALACE
This palace is one of the finest examples of Gothic civil architecture in France, with two facades reflecting its history.
Born around 1400, Jacques Cœur was a major figure in history. He built his wealth on trade and coinage as the King's Grand Argentier. His palace, completed in 1451 on a Gallo-Roman rampart, is a Gothic masterpiece with a medieval façade and an Italianate facade. The place is packed with symbols, from exotic trees to alchemical signs. You'll find the shell and the heart, his emblems, associated with the fleur-de-lis. Imprisoned in 1456, he died in exile in Chios. His motto: "Nothing is impossible to a valiant heart".
