THE CASTLE OF AUBELLES
The remains of the 12th-century Château des Aubelles bear witness to a glorious past and remain a historic gem in the Berry region.
Château des Aubelles, summer residence of the Counts of Sancerre, was built in the 12th century and lived in until the Hundred Years' War. Built on alluvial soils rich in sapwood, it was protected by a moat fed by the Vauvise river. After centuries of decay, it was turned into a farm in the 19th century. Now in ruins, its 14-sided polygonal enclosure and remains bear witness to its glorious past. Inspired by the fortifications of Philippe Auguste, this exceptional structure remains a Berry treasure.
